Block 31

Borders: Powelton to Pearl, 32nd to 33rd.

Includes the 20 rowhouses on Powelton, the storybook twins on Pearl, along with the larger lot at 307-9 N. 33rd, former home of Move, now 6 generic townhouses. Several storefronts cluster at the southwest corner, with empty windows replacing the longtime Village Cleaners. Four rowhouses on 32nd overlook the park: with lovely tiny roofed parapets, and wooden overhangs on the 2nd story windows.

Varied in housing size and type, the brick structures were unified by their beautifully grand gabled dormers, and the elegantly curved porch arches: see the 32nd street rowhouses for a remaining example.

Arguably the most famous block in Powelton: I've included some vintage images of the fence used to blockade 33rd Street in 1978, as well as from some iconic photos.
